Aftercare

One of the many benefits of Permanent Makeup is the time you save on your morning routine.
You will, however, need to give extra care to your cosmetic tattoo to ensure you get the most out of your investment.

The longevity of your permanent makeup depends on many factors with aftercare being one of them.
Once you leave Bos Ink Studio the artist’s job is done and the cosmetic tattoo is in your hands. So, it is extremely important to follow the aftercare instructions very closely during the healing stage and beyond.

What to expect following your cosmetic tattoo appointment

Immediately after, you may experience some mild discomfort or tenderness around the treated area with some swelling and redness. This is normal and typically subsides within 24-48 hours.

In the days following, the tattoo will become darker and more defined as the pigment oxidizes on the surface of the skin. This is normal and will lighten as the skin sheds and starts to heal. For brow clients, it is normal to experience some ‘brow shock’ during the first week as the brows go through the rapid changes from dark and defined to scabby and peeling. Don’t stress – trust the process!

After the first few days of the healing process, some scabbing, flaking and dryness of the skin is normal. The scabby/flakey stage can last up to the 10 day to two-week mark. Lips heal much faster with the dry/chapped phase lasting up to a week. It is extremely important you DO NOT SCRATCH, PICK OR REMOVE SCABS. Let them naturally fall off on their own. Picking at the scabs will remove the pigment early and effect the final healed result. Resist the urge to scratch.
You may experience some itchiness as the skin heals. You may notice the pigment colour disappear with the scabs. Don’t worry, it will return. This is totally normal and you must remember that while the visible top layer of skin is healed in 2 weeks, the final result will be visible closer to 6-8 weeks when the treated area has completely healed.

For best results:

-Avoid direct water on the tattoo area for 2 weeks.
-Avoid makeup applied on the area for at least 2 weeks or until all the scabs have fallen off naturally.
-Avoid soaps, cleansers or heavy creams on the tattoo. Clean around the area using only a clean cloth or oil-free makeup wipe.
-No Vaseline, Neosporin and any other petroleum based products on the tattoo area.
-Avoid excessive sweating for 10 days i.e. no working out or saunas.
-Avoid swimming, hot tubs or any other bodies of water for 2 weeks.
-Limit sun exposure (no tanning beds either) during the healing process. Once healed, always apply SPF30 to the area to avoid fading/colour changing.
-No massages, facials, intensive skin treatments, exfoliants, retinols or AHA’s to the treated area for 30 days, to prevent premature fading. After 30 days do not apply retinol to the tattoo area.
-No laser light therapy to the treated area as it can lighten/darken or distort the pigment. Always advise the laser tech of your tattoo!

Caring for your tattoo

Brows:

DAY 1
Gently dab your eyebrow tattoo with the provided distilled water wipes every 1-2 hours after your appointment. Apply a small amount of the aftercare ointment on clean, dried brows before you go to bed – remembering less is more!

DAY 2 – 14
Morning and evening gently clean the eyebrows using a damp (warm water) cotton pad and then with a q-tip apply a very thin layer of the aftercare ointment provided. Make sure you allow your brows to air dry before applying the aftercare ointment, you want to avoid trapping any moisture as it will cause excess scabbing.

DO NOT over apply the ointment as over hydrating the skin can cause issues with pigment retention. The ointment provided spreads very easily so only a very small amount is required. (Half the size of a rice grain)

Lip Blush:

DAY 1
If you experience any fluid leaking from your freshly tattooed lips, wipe them with the provided distilled water wipes and pat them dry. Do not let fluid sit on your lips as it causes excess scabbing. Using a q-tip, apply the provided aftercare ointment throughout the day to keep the lips hydrated.

DAY 2 – 7
Using a q-tip, apply the aftercare ointment as often as you like, whenever you feel your lips are dry/tight. The provided aftercare ointment is the only thing you should be using on your lips during this time.

I couldn’t be happier, my eyebrows looked amazing after the first session. I know they are going to look even better after my second session. Lani is very good at what she does I would highly recommend her.
